BUTTERFLY AVIARY SHARJAH
Butterfly biotope in an urban context

Biophilic design as an inspiring explorer space

The interior of the butterfly house in the Butterfly Pavilion is an important element on Al Noor Island in the Sharjah City metropolis in the Dubai conurbation, which was holistically designed by 3deluxe.

The subtropical biotope is a habitat for exotic butterflies and is embedded in a complex architectural freeform printed with floral ornaments. The beauty of nature fuses with man-made design to create an inspiring place to explore and discover.

Tropical butterflies only live for a few weeks. All the more complex are the climatic conditions necessary for their well-being. The designers of 3deluxe created a biotope, designed for 26 degrees and a slightly higher humidity, in the middle of a crystalline glass body of around 230 square metres, whose room height rises from three and a half metres to around five and a half metres. The floor-to-ceiling glazing connects wall and ceiling; a glance upwards reveals organically shaped skylights and the golden glowing shadow roof above. Here, free-flying insects can be experienced up close, for example at the feeding stations with sugar water and fruit. The eye follows them and finally loses itself in the plants, leaves, ornaments and fruits of the artificial tropical world.

The natural becomes artificial, the man-made resembles nature. A landscape made of the thermoformed solid surface material Krion merges the horizontal and the vertical, planters and seating. The butterfly house illustrates the design principle of "multilayered atmospheres": patterns and ornaments are emblazoned on the solid surface like echoes of the shadow roof, walk-on tattoos. Natural fields seem to grow directly out of the florally printed material, which, depending on its position, can be the floor or a vertical garden. Visitors walk on wooden walkways through a landscape that dissolves traditional spatial boundaries. Visitors stand in an all-over that makes wall, floor and ceiling one, a play of layers and overlays of shadows, projections, real as well as printed plants.
