A white bridge links the landscape park on Noor Island designed by 3deluxe with the mainland and welcomes visitors into the island’s unique, contemplative atmosphere.
Until quite recently, Al Noor Island could only be reached by boat, but it now boasts a meandering almost 100-meter long fiberglass bridge, seamless, as is its aluminium balustrade. This is not simply a piece of engineering connecting two locations at the shortest point between them, but rather a transitional zone that encapsulates the idea behind the island itself – contemplation. From the entrance, with its projecting shadow roof, visitors follow a winding path that slows them down step by step, making for constantly changing views of the city, lagoon and island.
The bridge itself appears to be hovering above the lagoon, dissolving in the constant shadows cast by the balustrade. At its narrowest point it is barely 2.3 meters wide - enough for golf trolleys - after which it widens out to almost seven meters. This is a quiet spot. From benches in the shade of a dragon’s blood tree the city, outlined beyond the bay, appears near and far at one and the same time. A ribbon of stylized flowers frames the bridge. Each flower has a tiny, individually controllable light spot as its pistil. As soon as dusk falls, hundreds of LED lights dissolve the bridge in a flickering mist and it starts to pulsate.
