EDEKA MARKET
Bad Dürkheim

Regional Identity Meets Sustainable Design

At the southern entrance of Bad Dürkheim, a new supermarket designed by 3deluxe architecture is redefining what local retail architecture can be. The EDEKA Market Bad Dürkheim combines regional identity, sustainable construction, and high spatial quality — transforming an everyday shopping destination into a distinctive landmark for the city.

The sculptural design draws inspiration from the Dubbeglas, a traditional symbol of the Palatinate wine culture. Its curved wooden structure, large glass façades, and circular façade openings reinterpret the characteristic “Dubbe” texture in a contemporary architectural form. Constructed from renewable timber, the building sets new standards in resource efficiency and environmental responsibility.

Architecture and Climate in Balance

A green roof and solar panels arranged in circular patterns extend the Dubbeglas motif while forming an integral part of the building’s climate strategy. The photovoltaic system generates clean energy, while the planted roof improves insulation and supports local biodiversity. Around 50 new trees and a meadow for insects further enhance the site’s microclimate and ecological value.

Daylight openings along the façade reduce the need for artificial lighting and create a bright, natural interior atmosphere. A porous paving system allows rainwater to seep into the ground, maintaining the natural water cycle and reducing surface sealing — a small but significant contribution to sustainable urban design.

A Social Hub for the Community

More than a place for groceries, the new EDEKA market is conceived as a social meeting point. A café with outdoor seating and a green neighborhood plaza invite residents to linger, meet, and connect. The design reflects 3deluxe’s guiding principle: to create architecture that engages people, strengthens communities, and adds long-term value to its surroundings.

Developed in collaboration with EDEKA Südwest and the local operator EDEKA Stiegler, the project is scheduled for completion in 2027 — setting a precedent for sustainable retail architecture in Germany’s wine region.
