For the city of Wiesbaden, 3deluxe is designing and planning a small, iconic pavilion that will form the heart of a new urban square and is dedicated to the historic event of the Berlin Airlift. The airlift, organized by the Western Allies in 1948 to supply the western part of Berlin, was coordinated in Wiesbaden at the time, and this over-year-long humanitarian effort is intended to remain anchored in the city’s memory.
The newly created square, located on one of Wiesbaden’s major access roads, marks the entrance to a new urban district that will be completed in early 2024. This district, nestled in a historic villa neighborhood, will provide affordable housing of high architectural quality.
3deluxe was tasked with creating a new urban meeting space, including a gastronomic offering, that in its design form would evoke the theme of the airlift.
The architects of 3deluxe designed the roof of the planned pavilion as an abstract gesture of a launching, ascending flying object, meant to architecturally reflect the positive and determined spirit of the airlift. The dynamic, three-dimensional roof, made from two-dimensional deformed aluminum slats, reminiscent in form and material of the wings of the “Candy Bombers,” will soon house an attractive restaurant run by a local restaurateur and become the vibrant center of the new urban district. Seating steps and outdoor seating around the pavilion, as well as the inviting interior design with an open show kitchen, invite visitors to linger, enjoy, and relax in a communicative atmosphere throughout the day.
A particular challenge for 3deluxe in this project was to shape a sophisticated 3D-formed roof efficiently and to integrate a functioning gastronomy within the small footprint of the building, accommodating 40 indoor seats and 30 outdoor seats.
The building uses district heating and heat recovery for efficient, sustainable energy supply.
BACKGROUND OF THE PROJECT
The development of the new Wiesbadener Kaiserhof Quarter is already considered a model of urban renewal. In 2018, the Wiesbaden Urban Development Corporation (SEG) acquired the site of the former hotel used by the U.S. military and created an attractive neighborhood with elegant city villas, which includes over 100 subsidized apartments. The entrance square to the quarter, featuring the Airlift Memorial, the 3deluxe pavilion, and an organic supermarket, forms the final component of the development area and is expected to be fully completed by the end of 2025.
