For the exhibition Ampelphase 5 'stopmotion' 3deluxe produced a simple, clear object reflecting both the exhibition theme as well as their own design preferences: a plain black block with a dynamic light installation. '3deluxe uses information as building material', writes db deutsche bauzeitung 2006. The Vitra-installation refers to this quote - to 3deluxe's preference to associate architectures and spaces with information and content, and to explore the possibilities of vitality and poetry within seemingly inanimate materials. What does the light play of the 78 cold cathode tubes on the black cuboid reflect? Is it the flow of traffic in front of the Vitra showroom? Does it reflect the traffic signals? Maybe it reacts to the visitors? To their gestures? Their hair colour? Their account balance? Is it linked to the weather forecast? Does it detect the melting of the ice fields in Greenland? Does it have a life of its own? Are its reactions not controllable at all? In the end, the actual source of information is not crucial. The aesthetic component of the light play and the associative possibilities lend the black building block its appeal. The unstatic, vital components extend the architects and the designers repertoire of materials and open up fascinating possibilities to give architecture and interior design new, contemporary qualitites. The exhibition was shown from 18 August - 7 September 2011 at the Vitra showroom in Frankfurt.
