In the subterranean exhibition situated in the discontinued section of the Berchtesgarden salt mine experimental light scenographies and interactive exhibits convey knowledge of the element salt in intuitive manner.
650 meters below the surface visitors of the salt mine will discover a strange and extraordinary world, whose extreme geological architectures evoke a very unique atmosphere. The exhibition experience is therefore divided into two parts: lighting effects are superimposed on the premises and intensify the spatial perception, emotionally leading visitors into the experience as well as the overall exhibition theme. In addition, several exhibition modules convey the at times highly complex thematic information. In this section interactive, multi-sensual exhibits appeal to all senses and encourage visitors to explore the exhibition theme ‘salt’.
At the start of the tour visitors cross an underground lake on a raft in complete darkness, taking them directly into the fantastical space under ground. A light and sound installation correlates the growth of crystal fragments and attunes visitors for their stay.
The coarse, roughly hewn tunnels accommodate an underground research station, whose laboratory-like aesthetics are in stark contrast with the surroundings. The main attraction of the salt laboratory is a 3D model of the mine, showing the complete underground tunnel system thus providing the means of spatial orientation in this unusual environment. Illumination of different areas, typographical insertions and corresponding film sequences as well as sound effects trans-form the model into a multi-layered media information unit that visualizes complex facts.
Another part of the exhibition design transfers the topic ‘salt’ into a radiant crystal structure, which absorbs exhibits and interactive interfaces and is covered by a layer of content in the shape of typographic elements. Bright glass objects make abstract, quantitative content tangible and convey information about the fundamental importance of the element ‘salt’ for human life. Touch screens allow visitors to access exciting facts and answers to everyday questions via simple, playful hand movements.
